👉 Estrogen Dominance
Apr 11, 2026👉 Is Estrogen Dominance Causing Hormonal Havoc in You?
Why it’s a Hidden Driver of Weight Gain, Fatigue, and Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common—and overlooked—contributors to declining health today.
One pattern I see frequently in clinical practice is estrogen dominance—a condition that can quietly disrupt metabolism, mood, and overall well-being.
What Is Estrogen Dominance?
Estrogen is an essential hormone for both men and women. It should normally be balanced with adequate natural progesterone.
When estrogen levels become too high, especially relative to progesterone levels—or when the body cannot properly break it down and eliminate it—unhealthy estrogen metabolites can accumulate and begin to interfere with other hormonal systems.
This imbalance can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Unexplained weight gain (sometimes rapid, even without lifestyle changes)
- Decreased libido
- Infertility
- Mood swings and fatigue
- Hot flashes and sweats ( in men and women!)
- For women: heavy or irregular cycles, severe cramps, low progesterone
- For men: reduced testosterone levels, ED, prostate enlargement
Over time, estrogen dominance is also associated with an increased risk of hormone-related cancers, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers.
Why Is Estrogen Dominance So Common Today?
Modern life plays a major role. There are 3 major areas of impact:
- We are constantly exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, —substances that mimic estrogen (xenoestrogens) and other hormones in the body (and overwhelm our natural detox systems.)
Common xenoestrogen sources include:
- Plastics and micro plastics
- Pesticides
- Personal care products
- Petrochemicals
- Genetically modified foods
- Mold mycotoxins
- At the same time, natural progesterone production, critical for balancing estrogen, is often diminished due to chronically elevated stress hormones, birth control, synthetic HRT, adrenal and insulin resistance issues.
- For the majority of folks, our detox pathways—primarily the liver, gut, and kidneys—are often under-supported due to stress, poor nutrition, and toxic overload
--- and it’s no wonder we have an epidemic of obesity!!
The Estrogen–Weight Gain Cycle
One of the most frustrating aspects of estrogen dominance is how it impacts weight.
Here’s why:
👉 Excess estrogen and xenoestrogens promote fat storage
👉 Fat cells then produce more estrogen and store more toxins
👉 Which all further worsens the imbalances
This creates a self-perpetuating cycle that makes weight loss feel nearly impossible.
What we see this daily in our clinical settings: Initial rapid weight loss mobilizes fat-soluble toxins and xenoestrogens. Without adequate support, the body recirculates these compounds, rather than eliminating them, fueling further imbalances and weight is often gained back rapidly!
What to DO?
Support Hormone Balance Through Detoxification
The good news is that your body is designed to process and eliminate excess hormones—when given the right support!
A short, structured reset can help!
- Reduce incoming hormone disruptors
- Improve liver detoxification pathways
- Support healthy estrogen metabolism
- Enhance elimination through the gut

What a Hormone Cleanse Involves
A well-designed hormone detox focuses on supporting your body—not depriving it.
Key components include:
- Removing Hormone Disruptors
Reducing exposure to processed foods, plastics, and chemical-laden products that contribute to estrogen overload.
- Supporting Liver & Gut Function
Incorporating foods that enhance detox pathways, including:
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Fiber-rich foods
- Antioxidant-rich nutrients
- Adequate protein
These help your body safely process and eliminate excess estrogen.
- Targeted Nutritional Support
Specific nutrients and supplements such as methylated B’s, inositol and DIM can support detoxification pathways and help balance hormones more efficiently.
What to Expect During a Detox Cleanse
For some, a cleanse can feel like a reset.
For others, it can be more challenging initially.
Temporary symptoms may include:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Skin changes
- Mood shifts
- Cravings
- Gut issues
These reactions are often short-lived and can typically be managed with proper lifestyle and nutritional support including adequate hydration, elimination and rest. There are many suggestions on what to do in the handouts that go with the 10 Day Hormone Cleanse below.
As the body adjusts, many people begin to notice:
👉 Increased energy
👉 Improved digestion
👉 Reduced inflammation
👉 More balanced mood
👉 Better hormone markers
Is Estrogen Dominance Affecting You?
If you’re experiencing:
- Stubborn weight gain
- Hormonal symptoms that don’t seem to resolve
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Irregular cycles or low libido
- Hot flashes or sweats (no matter your age or gender!)
…it may be worth exploring whether estrogen dominance from xenoestrogens and disrupted estrogen metabolism is part of the picture.
Final Thoughts
Estrogen dominance is not just a hormonal issue—it’s a reflection of how your body is processing the modern environment. If you’d like to try the plan I’ve been using successfully for many years with clients, please check out my 10 Day Hormone Cleanse below.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s supporting your body’s natural ability to detoxify, rebalance, and heal.
When you do that, everything begins to shift.
Always have hope for your health and healing!

BONUS INFO on WEIGHT and GLP-1s
Hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance are deeply influenced by metabolic signaling…
Many of the issues we’ve discussed—whether it’s estrogen dominance, hormone imbalance, inflammation, chronic pain, or toxin exposure—share a deeper connection with metabolic signaling and appetite regulation.
One of the most important pathways involved is GLP-1, a hormone produced in our bodies that influences:
- blood sugar balance
- inflammation
- satiety and cravings
- energy metabolism
Millions of folks are now using GLP-1 like drugs (GLP-1 Agonists), however the side effects can be devastating, especially when the root causes of the weight gain are not being addressed! There are better, more sustainable, less expensive alternatives for the long run.
Dr Gail Clayton and I understand when natural GLP-1 signaling is disrupted, it can make symptoms worse—and healing much harder. The answer is not just using a prescription GLP-1 agonist!
That’s why we created a free 95-page guide to help you understand how to naturally support these pathways and start addressing root causes.
[In general Dr Christensen would recommend starting with the 10 day Hormone Cleanse to support detox pathways prior to implementing our GLP-1 Alternatives program.]
